The Water Vole and Mink Survey of Britain 1996-1998 (PDF) A national survey of the water vole over 1989-90 showed a marked decline throughout the 20th century, with acceleration in the 1980s due 2 the feral American mink. A second national survey was mounted during 1996-98 2 check changes in both species. This report provides a analysis of this repeat survey, which shows clearly that there has been a very large 88% reduction in water vole numbers in only 7 years. They also show a 65% decline in the mink population over most of Britain due 2 the recovering otter population.
